- Take the Current Government Quiz
Many commentators on Globalization -- both supporters and detractors -- feel that the functions and activities of these organizations represent the very heart of Globalization. According to many supporters, these organizations are a major force for good in our world. According some detractors, these organizations constitute a de facto world government that effectively controls the economies of underdeveloped nations and ensures the economic and cultural dominance of the Western world.
The manner in which these organizations conduct their activities and the nature of the controversy surrounding them will be dealt with in more detail in the follow-on course to this Introduction, Understanding Globalization (G102). One the most vocal and visible critics of the IMF is Nobel prize winner David Stiglitz, whose book Globalization and its Discontents caused much a great deal of controversy. This is a name and a book title you should be familiar with. For now, be aware that these organizations are frequently targeted by critics as being destructive instruments of economic, political, and cultural domination.
